Giving Maeve O’Meara a run for best gourmet safari is Maeve Wine, the beautiful new European wine bar and eatery in South Brisbane’s iconic Queensland National Bank building.
Just like the heritage-listed space it occupies, Maeve radiates elegance and class with its continental-inspired menu and focus on classic European and Australian wines. A walk up its mahogany steps will reveal another world of Gatsby-esque proportions. Think indulgent, speak-easy vibes combined with timber flooring, blackened furniture, double-hung windows, and touches of brass throughout the bar.
‘Born from a love of wine, food, and warm hospitality,’ Maeve wine is the passion project of big foodie names Eleanor Cappa, Maris Cook, and Jesse Stevens. If Cook and Stevens in particular ring a bell, it’s probably due to their long-time presence in Fish Lane as chefs of fellow favourites Hello Please and Ol’ School!
Cappa also boasts an impressive hospitality resume, as the previous connoisseur of wine behind restaurant greats such as Melbourne’s Movida on Hosier Lane, and now Maeve Wine.
Putting the decant in decadent, their combined expertise is immediately evident in the wine selection on offer. While you can expect bottles travelling from as far as Burgundy and Bordeaux, the focus is not just on old-world wines, with great contemporaries from Australian producers also making the shelf. Dispelling the myth within the industry that great wine is only accessible to a select few, Maeveare making everyone’s favourite drink more accessible, welcoming all (from aficionados to first-timers) through their copper doors.
While Cook and Stevens are still adding final touches to the menu, rumour has it that succulent charcoal-grilled hanger steak with café de Paris butter, black garlic waffles with blue cheese parfait, and sourdough crumpets with honey duck ham may just make the list.
While Maeve’s décor and wine selections are timeless, be sure to time your visits between 4pm – midnight, which are their opening hours every day of the week!
Whether you need the perfect setting for a sitting with friends, or quick nip before heading to QPAC, Maeve Wine is the place to be.
