Experience a brush with top artists at QAG’s Open Studio
Open Studio, a new long-running exhibition series by the Queensland Art Gallery, offers visitors an intimate look into the practice and process of leading Aussie artists.
From Saturday, June 8, artists will be invited to transform the Pelican Lounge at the Queensland Art Gallery into their temporary workshop space. Running through to January 2021, the first four-month Open Studio residency will be held by John Honeywill, whose still-life paintings of everyday objects are both familiar and striking.
Visitors to Open Studio will have access to the artists’ processes, material preferences, and experiments through their journeys towards creating pieces. In addition to the Open Studio creative space, an Artist Gallery will feature pieces selected by the artist-in-residence that either inspire or complement their own work.
To celebrate the launch of Open Studio on Saturday, June 8, guests are invited to watch John at work from 12pm-2pm, followed by a talk at which he will discuss how we works in the studio, and what inspires his stunning takes on pedestrian scenes. There will also be drawing stations at which visitors can try their hand at John’s style (and maybe even learn a few tips from the master himself)!
John Honeywill is set to occupy the creative space until the end of September, 2019; QAG is open 10am-5pm every day, and admission is free.
